Is it Possible to Save a Knocked-Out Tooth?

Accidentally knocking out a tooth can be a very upsetting experience, but what many people don’t realize is that it may still be possible to save a tooth that has been injured this way. The most important thing to remember is that you need to act quickly. Here’s a guide to what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth, and why when it comes to saving your smile, time is of the essence!

I Knocked Out My Tooth! Now What?

If you have accidentally knocked your tooth out, the first thing to do is remain calm. Next, rinse out your mouth gently with water, and clear away any bits of debris. If your tooth is still intact, it is possible to reattach it if you act quickly.

Once you have determined that the tooth is in good condition, you need to keep it safe. The best way to do this is to place it in the socket it was knocked out of. You can also keep it in your mouth between your cheek and gum, or in a container of milk, saliva, or the fluid in a tooth preservation kit. Never put it in water, as this will kill the tooth.

Next, contact your emergency dentist for an urgent appointment. Your tooth can survive being knocked out for about an hour before it begins to deteriorate, so the faster you act to restore it, the better the odds that it can be reimplanted.

What Happens Next?

If your dentist can successfully reimplant your tooth, you will need to be very careful with it until it heals. It will be splinted into place until it can survive unsupported. Your dentist will provide a list of care instructions for you to follow during this time. Please be aware that there is always a chance that the reimplantation may fail. If this happens, your dentist can discuss tooth replacement options with you, such as a bridge, denture, or dental implant.

Remember, accidents happen, but a knocked-out tooth doesn’t automatically mean it’s gone for good. If you act swiftly, it may be possible to save a tooth that is knocked loose. If you have been injured, don’t wait to get help. Contact your dentist as soon as possible for the best chance of restoring your smile.
