Northampton Dentist: Keep Your Smile Beautiful!

Northampton Dentist

Northampton Dentist | Sometimes it comes down to the basics. Even though there are a variety of dental treatments and procedures available, they are not always needed if you take care of your oral hygiene at home. This includes things like making good food choices, practicing proper brushing technique, and flossing regularly.

So let’s take a look at some common elements of oral hygiene so that you can maintain your beautiful teeth and smile! Be sure to contact our Northampton dentist to schedule your dental consultation.

About Teeth Brushing

It doesn’t get much more basic than brushing your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. But not everyone knows when, and how, to brush their teeth. Ideally, you want to be brushing your teeth following every meal or snack; however, twice daily is adequate to maintain good oral health. Make a habit of brushing your teeth soon after you wake up and right before bedtime to remove all of that plaque buildup.

 Your Tooth Brushing Technique

As important as it is to know when to brush, it is equally important to know how to brush. Make sure that you’re brushing your teeth for a minimum of two minutes with a circular motion. Spend an equal amount of time brushing each section of your mouth. You need to be brushing all surfaces of your teeth and gently massage your gums using a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove oral bacteria.

Replace Toothbrush Head

A toothbrush cannot be expected to last forever and will experience some wear and tear over time. So don’t wait until it’s falling apart before you replace it. Replace your toothbrush every three months, or when it begins looking worn, whichever comes first. Our Northampton Dentist can also best advise how to choose the best toothbrush.

Making Good Food Choices

Preventing tooth decay is usually the most serious oral health concern for patients of all ages. To prevent tooth decay, you need to pay attention to the foods that you eat on a regular basis. Limit your consumption of the following:

  • Sugary snacks and beverages
  • Tobacco products
  • Dark-colored beverages like coffee and tea that can stain your teeth
  • Drinks like sodas that contain a high amount of acidity and sugar – a double whammy on your teeth

Keep in mind that carbohydrates can increase the acidity in your mouth, as well as produce a lot of sugar, leading to tooth demineralization and decay.

On the other hand, nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and whole grains will reduce your odds of developing tooth decay.

Although fruit juice contains many healthy nutrients, it can also contain a great deal of sugar. So read those product labels, and avoid juices that are loaded with sugar that can lead to tooth decay. You can also double-check with our Northampton Dentist.
